After nearly three decades as Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) superintendent, Hal Harrell has announced his retirement effective immediately. In a statement released Tuesday, Harrell says his heart is broken over the May 24 shooting that killed 21 people and wounded 10 others at Santa Fe High School.
"I have given this a lot of thought and prayer," Harrell said in the statement. "I have decided that it is in the best interest of our students, staff and community for me to retire."
Harrell, who is 62, has been with CISD since 1990 and became superintendent in 2006. Prior to that, he served as principal of Uvalde High School for 12 years.
"It's been an honor to serve the Uvalde community," Harrell said in the statement. "I love this community and its people."
The district has not yet announced plans for finding a replacement for Harrell.
