In a wide-ranging interview on NY1's "Inside City Hall," Paterson said he believes the increase in shootings this year is due in part to the police department's decision to end its "stop and frisk" policy.
"We have a lot of animals running around in the city now," Paterson said. "I was walking through Central Park the other day, there were foxes running all over the place."
Paterson, who served as governor from 2008 to 2010, said he believes the city is heading in the wrong direction under Mayor Bill de Blasio.
"The mayor has a blind spot when it comes to crime," Paterson said. "He really does believe that if you give people enough social programs, that will solve the crime problem."
Paterson said he believes more cops are needed on the streets and that stop and frisk should be used as a tool to combat crime.
"You have to use every tool at your disposal to make sure people are safe," Paterson said. "And I don't think this administration understands that."
