When Jennifer Siebel Newsom saw Harvey Weinstein in court on Monday, it brought back memories of her own brushes with sexual assault.
The California governor's wife was among the accusers who spoke out during Weinstein's rape and sexual assault trial, saying she wanted to make sure he "never does this to anyone else again."
Siebel Newsom said she first met Weinstein in 2006, when she was working on a documentary about gender inequality in Hollywood. She said he initially seemed like a "champion of women," but that changed when he propositioned her for sex.
"He cornered me in a room and tried to kiss me," Siebel Newsom said. "I was able to push him off of me and get out of the room."
She said she later ran into Weinstein at a party, where he again tried to kiss her. She said she was able to avoid him, but the encounter left her feeling "humiliated and terrified."
While Siebel Newsom said she was never assaulted by Weinstein, she knows that many other women were not so lucky. She hopes that by speaking out, she can help ensure that he is held accountable for his actions and that other victims feel empowered to come forward.
