Hakeem Jeffries, top candidate to replace Nancy Fox as House Democratic leader, supports studying feasibility of slavery reparations!

In an interview with CBS News' "Face the Nation" on Sunday, Jeffries said he would support a House resolution to study the issue of reparations for the descendants of slaves.

"I think it's a debate that we should have," Jeffries said. "I'm not sure what form that ultimately will take, but I think it's important for us to understand the history of slavery in this country and its legacy."

Jeffries' comments come as the House Democratic caucus is set to elect its new leader on Wednesday. Nancy Pelosi is currently the front-runner for the position, but some Democrats have been pushing for a change in leadership.

If Jeffries does become leader, it's possible that he would use his position to push for a vote on reparations. In 2016, then-House Speaker Paul Ryan blocked a vote on a bill that would have established a commission to study reparations.
