John Fetterman, the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, made headlines in December when he voted to release Edward Silvis from prison. Silvis had been convicted of first-degree murder in the 1969 killing of an elderly woman in her home.

The move was controversial, with some people arguing that Silvis should remain in prison and others saying that he had served his time and deserved a second chance.

Fetterman himself acknowledged that there was no easy answer, but said that he had decided to err on the side of compassion.

"I don't pretend to know what justice looks like for Mr. Silvis," Fetterman said. "But I do know that after 50 years, it's time for him to come home."

The case has drawn renewed attention in recent years, with a documentary film about Silvis's life premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2017.
