Gergely Dudás was a popular graphic artist from Budapest, Hungary. He had recently become an internet sensation thanks to his unique coffee cup math puzzles. Every year, around the time of the New Year, Gergely would share a new puzzle that tested people’s knowledge and mathematical skills. This year was no exception.
As 2023 approached, Gergely shared his newest puzzle on social media with the caption: “Test your knowledge ahead of 2023 New Year with this coffee cup math puzzle! Can you solve it?” His followers eagerly awaited the challenge and were not disappointed when he shared it.
The puzzle showed four cups arranged in a square formation. Each cup had a different number of beans inside—1 bean, 4 beans, 6 beans and 8 beans—and the goal was to move one bean from one cup to another in order to make all four cups have an equal number of beans.
The puzzle quickly gained traction online as people tried their best to solve it. Some posted their solutions while others asked for help. Within days, Gergely’s post had gone viral and thousands of people had attempted to solve it.
Finally, after much debate and discussion among his followers, someone managed to crack the code and post the correct solution: Move 1 bean from the 8-bean cup into the 1-bean cup; then move 1 bean from the 6-bean cup into the 4-bean cup; then move 1 bean from the 4-bean cup into the 8-bean cup; then move 1 bean from the 8-bean cup into the 6-bean cup; finally move 1 bean from the 6-bean cup into the 1-bean cup. All four cups now have 5 beans each!
Gergely was delighted that his puzzle had been solved correctly and thanked everyone who participated in solving it. As 2023 arrived soon after, everyone celebrated with a newfound appreciation for mathematical puzzles!
