Navy SEAL trainee James Derek Lovelace died during his first pool exercise in May 2016. The 21-year-old's mother, Karen Lovelace, has been outspoken about what she perceives as the Navy's lack of transparency surrounding her son's death.
Now, eight months later, she is still seeking answers from the Navy about what happened to her son and why.
"I want to know what happened to my son," she said in an interview with Fox News. "I want to know why he died."
Lovelace was one of nine sailors who died during Navy training in 2016. His death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner, but the Navy has not released any details about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Karen Lovelace has hired a lawyer and is demanding the Navy release all records related to her son's death, including any video footage or photographs. She has also asked for a meeting with Navy leaders to discuss the matter.
So far, the Navy has declined her request for a meeting and has not given her any indication that they will release any additional information.
"The Navy owes me answers," she said. "They owe me transparency."
