"I've had people like that before where they're just so negative and so sure of themselves and they think they're just God's gift to the world," Cameron said of DiCaprio. "And you just want to say, 'OK, fuck you. We'll see how far you go.'"

Cameron was on a panel at the Paley Center for Media in New York on Tuesday night to discuss his work on "Titanic" and "Avatar."

When asked about the experience of working with DiCaprio, Cameron said he initially had doubts about him.

"He was this little kid who I almost didn't call back because he was just so negative," Cameron recalled. "But there was just something about his energy that was compelling."

Cameron said he eventually gave DiCaprio a chance and cast him in the role of Jack Dawson.

"I'm glad I did," Cameron said. "He was great."
