The Iberian Peninsula was rocked by a powerful Atlantic storm that caused severe flooding, leaving homes and stores in Lisbon, Portugal devastated.
The storm hit the Portuguese capital early Sunday morning and continued through Monday, with heavy rainfalls, strong winds and intense thunderstorms that brought chaos to the city. Streets were submerged in water, resulting in flooded buildings and homes. Public transportation was severely impacted as well, with buses and trains being delayed or cancelled altogether due to dangerous conditions on roadways.
The storm moved westward into Spain later on Monday. Numerous cities in northern Spain have reported flooding of their own, including Galicia which has been particularly hard-hit by the storm’s wrath. Strong winds have also caused trees to be uprooted across various regions, causing further damage to property and disrupting electricity lines.
Portugal’s National Institute of Meteorology (INM) has warned citizens of the dangers posed by this type of weather event and urged them to take precautions such as avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm’s duration. The INM also urged people living in low-lying areas to move to higher ground if necessary.
The government has declared a state of emergency for both Portugal and Spain as officials work to assess the damage caused by this powerful Atlantic storm. So far, there have been no reports of any casualties but the full extent of destruction is yet to be seen as rescue teams continue their efforts in both countries.
