Geno Smith was feeling optimistic about his prospects to return to Seattle for another season. After years of being stuck in a backup role, the pending free agent quarterback had finally gotten the chance he’d been waiting for – to prove himself as a starter. And he'd done just that, having a resurgent year with the Seahawks and showing flashes of his former self.

Though Geno was still relatively unknown among many NFL fans, those who had watched him throughout the year were impressed by his new-found confidence and poise in the pocket. He’d also become a leader on offense, uniting the team behind him and leading them to several victories.

The Seahawks coaching staff had taken notice as well, observing how much better their offense was when Geno was under center. He hadn’t put up gaudy numbers like some other quarterbacks, but they knew he could be relied upon consistently to make plays when it mattered most.

So when it came time for contract negotiations, Geno felt confident that the Seahawks would offer him an extension to stay in Seattle for another year or two. Though there were no guarantees, he was hopeful that this would be his home for at least one more season – and maybe even beyond.
