"I can't even leave my own home without being shot at!"

New York Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., who is also running for governor in the state, said that the state's crime crisis is hitting home after two men were shot outside of his home on Sunday.

"I'm sick and tired of seeing my friends and neighbors be afraid to leave their homes because they're afraid of getting mugged or worse," Zeldin said in a statement. "We need to do something about the crime wave that's sweeping our state, and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that we get tough on criminals and keep our communities safe."

Zeldin's comments come as New York City is seeing a surge in shootings and other violent crimes. So far this year, there have been more than 1,000 shootings in the city, an increase of nearly 60 percent compared to the same period last year.

"The safety of our families should always be our top priority, and it's clear that we are not doing enough to keep New Yorkers safe," Zeldin said. "As governor, I will work tirelessly to make sure that our law enforcement has the resources they need to keep our communities safe and put an end to this crime wave."
