As a young, black woman, Missouri Congresswoman Cori Bush says she faced discrimination and a lack of understanding from medical professionals when she sought an abortion.

Bush, who is now a vocal advocate for reproductive rights, has described her own experience with abortion in a new essay for Glamour magazine.

In the piece, Bush opens up about how, as a teenager, she was pressured by doctors to have an abortion she says she "was not ready for."

"They told me that I was too young, that I wouldn't be able to handle it," Bush writes. "They said I would never be able to have children."

Bush says she was ultimately able to make the decision to have an abortion on her own terms, but only after "begging and pleading" with doctors.

"It shouldn't be this hard for women," Bush concludes. "It's our bodies, and our lives."
