"Inventing Anna" star released from immigration jail after 17 months!

A con artist who inspired the hit Netflix series "Inventing Anna" was released from immigration jail Friday after 17 months behind bars fighting her deportation to Germany.

Anna Sorokin, 28, was born in Russia but came to the United States on a student visa in 2008. She later assumed the false identity of Anna Delvey, a German heiress, and used it to defraud banks, hotels and businesses out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

She was arrested in October 2017 and pleaded guilty to multiple counts of grand larceny and theft of services in April 2019. A judge sentenced her to four to 12 years in prison, but she was released on Friday after serving 17 months.

Sorokin's case captured national attention for its audacity and because it echoed the story of another famous fraudster, Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos. Like Holmes, Sorokin was young, ambitious and eager to make her mark on the world.

But while Holmes is still awaiting trial, Sorokin has been deported back to her native Germany. It's unclear what her next move will be, but one thing is certain: the real Anna Delvey won't be conning anyone anytime soon.
