According to German authorities, two gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea were deliberately sabotaged, causing a significant disruption to the flow of gas from Russia into Europe. The first pipeline, known as the Nord Stream 2, was damaged on Sunday, while the second pipeline, known as the OPAL, was damaged on Monday. Both pipelines are operated by Russian energy giant Gazprom.
Germany has opened an investigation into the matter, and has asked for help from the Russian government in determining who is responsible for the sabotage. So far, there have been no claims of responsibility for the attacks.
The Baltic Sea is a key transit point for Russian gas exports to Europe, and any disruption to the flow of gas could have a significant impact on European countries that rely on Russia for their energy needs. In recent years, there have been a number of disputes between Russia and European countries over gas prices and supplies, and these latest incidents will only add to tensions between Moscow and its European customers.
