What is an Omnibus?

An omnibus is a legislative package that contains multiple bills. Usually, all of the bills included in an omnibus are related in some way and address similar topics, but it is not uncommon for them to involve unrelated issues as well. The purpose of an omnibus bill is to pass legislation more quickly and efficiently than individual bills would.

The Most Galling Thing About the Omnibus

One of the most galling aspects of many omnibus packages that have been passed recently is the inclusion of hundreds of millions of dollars going towards foreign aid for “border security” for American allies. The money allocated for this purpose typically goes towards equipment, training, and other resources used by the receiving nation's border patrol or other security forces.

The fact that such a large amount of money is given away to foreign countries can be seen as especially galling by those who believe that these funds could have been better used within our own borders. Indeed, many argue that these funds should instead be spent on improving infrastructure, health care, education, and other domestic programs which could benefit Americans much more directly than providing aid to our allies.

Conclusion
When it comes to large legislative packages such as the omnibus bill, there will always be certain elements which some may find offensive or disagreeable. In this case, it is clear that the hundreds of millions being allocated for foreign aid for “border security” are seen by many as a waste of taxpayers’ money which could otherwise be used in much more beneficial ways at home.
